FASHION UTOPIA: Sustainability in progress | Atlanta, Berlin, France

Fashion is more than what we wear—it’s a reflection of our history, culture, and values. This journal, curated by the Kultur Ensemble Atlanta, under the leadership of Oliver Gorf, Director of the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta and the French-German Cultural Institute, explores the transformative power of fashion as a medium for cultural dialogue, sustainability, and inclusivity.

With contributions from distinguished voices in fashion and culture—Marte Hentschel, Professor for Sustainable Fashion at BSP Berlin and Co-CEO of Berlin Fashion Hub; Tanjuria Willis, Founder of Atlanta Sustainable Fashion Week; Philippe Pourhashemi, internationally renowned fashion journalist and consultant; Axl Jansen, acclaimed international fashion and music photographer; and Uwe Westphal, celebrated journalist and author based in Berlin and London—this collection spans perspectives from Berlin to Atlanta.

The essays delve into the interconnected stories of fashion and society: from the Jewish fashion industry's vibrant yet tragic history in Berlin, to the pioneering diversity efforts in Atlanta, and the inspiring community ethos of Berlin's PLATTE collective. Together, they showcase how fashion reflects not just aesthetic innovation but also societal values and progress.

As a host city, Atlanta—a creative and cultural epicenter in the United States—is emerging as a leader in sustainable and inclusive fashion. This journal also celebrates its partnership with Berlin and Paris, drawing on the power of collaboration to shape a more ethical and equitable future for fashion.

Through these pages, we invite you to reflect on the historical, cultural, and ethical dimensions of fashion. What can the industry teach us about sustainability? How can it amplify marginalized voices and drive equity? This journal challenges us to weave a new narrative for fashion—one that values diversity, responsibility, and creativity.
